about cori's vision

Cori's Vision was inspired by Cori, a golden retriever mix who went blind from glaucoma at the tender age of three. A shy and uncertain dog in her youth, Cori had a difficult time adjusting to her newly dark world. She experienced depression, fear and behavioral setbacks (e.g. having accidents in the house) when she first lost her sight.

Through a series of specific commands, retraining techniques and plenty of love and reassurance, Cori has regained her confidence and then some. She is leading a happy, functional and productive life.

Since Cori lost her vision in 2005, Sarah Whitman has assisted blind dog owners and has distributed hundreds of copies of The Blind Dog Guide throughout the US and abroad. The Blind Dog Guide offers emotional support and practical tips to transition through this life-shaking event.

Over the years, Sarah has become increasingly in tune with the need for resources to assist people whose dogs have gone blind. This can be a time of panic, uncertainty, fear and a wide range of other emotions. It is easy to feel lost, hopeless and alone. But it doesn't have to be that way.

For anyone going through this transition, it is imperative to:

  • address any pain issues, which are common in many eye-related conditions
  • ensure proper medical attention to address pain and possibility of recovery, or even regaining sight
  • take time to retrain your dog so both of you can restore your lives
  • maintain loyalty to your dog. Don't turn your back on him now - s/he needs you now more than ever. As difficult as it may seem at the moment, your love and patience will pay off with an even stronger bond between the two of you. You will also feel good knowing you were a hero to a dog in need.
